Background of the Study:
Measles, a highly contagious viral disease, has seen a resurgence in various parts of Nigeria, with Jigawa State experiencing notable outbreaks. Vaccination is the most effective measure for preventing measles; however, vaccination refusal and hesitancy have undermined these efforts, contributing to the re-emergence of the disease (Okoro, 2023). Factors influencing vaccination refusal include misinformation, cultural beliefs, and distrust in healthcare systems. In Jigawa State, low vaccination uptake has resulted in immunity gaps within communities, making them vulnerable to outbreaks.
The resurgence of measles is particularly concerning given the disease’s potential to cause severe complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis, and death, especially among young children. Despite government-led immunization campaigns and international efforts to improve vaccine coverage, resistance to vaccination persists. This resistance is often rooted in misconceptions about vaccine safety, religious beliefs, and negative experiences with healthcare providers (Aminu, 2024). Social media and other informal communication channels have further amplified misinformation, leading to increased vaccine hesitancy.
Moreover, the logistical challenges in delivering vaccines to remote and underserved areas exacerbate the problem. Health infrastructure limitations, inadequate cold chain management, and insufficient funding have all contributed to suboptimal vaccination rates in Jigawa State. These issues are compounded by the lack of targeted educational programs that address community-specific concerns and cultural contexts.
This study aims to investigate the effect of vaccination refusal on the resurgence of measles in Jigawa State by assessing community attitudes, vaccination coverage, and outbreak data. By identifying the root causes of vaccine hesitancy and refusal, the study seeks to provide evidence-based recommendations for enhancing vaccination uptake and preventing future measles outbreaks (Fatima, 2025).
Statement of the Problem :
Measles outbreaks in Jigawa State have re-emerged as a significant public health issue, largely due to vaccination refusal. Despite the availability of a safe and effective measles vaccine, many communities in Jigawa State exhibit low vaccination coverage. This hesitancy is driven by a combination of cultural beliefs, misinformation, and distrust of the healthcare system. The resulting immunity gaps have facilitated the spread of measles, leading to increased morbidity and, in severe cases, mortality among children (Ibrahim, 2023).
The problem is compounded by infrastructural challenges, including inadequate healthcare facilities and logistical issues that hinder the effective distribution of vaccines. Additionally, the lack of comprehensive public health education has allowed myths and misconceptions about vaccines to flourish, further contributing to vaccine refusal. These factors not only jeopardize individual health but also strain the public health system, as outbreaks require substantial resources for containment and treatment (Umar, 2024).
Addressing measles resurgence necessitates a thorough investigation into the factors behind vaccination refusal and the development of targeted interventions to improve vaccine acceptance. This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating the level of vaccination refusal, understanding the underlying reasons, and assessing the impact on measles incidence. The findings will provide critical insights for policymakers and healthcare providers to design strategies that can enhance public trust in vaccination programs and ultimately reduce the burden of measles in Jigawa State.
